What is Weight Loss Surgery Procedure and Details?

After trying various non-surgical treatments and change in lifestyle, people decide for what is bariatric surgery. This is potentially for individuals dealing with life-threatening obesity and overweight problems. To be more precise, surgery is recommended to people with body mass index of over 40.

Weight loss surgery is a solution for obese and overweight people. It gives them a chance to get rid of accumulated fat from bothersome areas of the body. While some experts suggest nutritious diet with low-carbohydrates and physical activities throughout the day, others suggest weight loss surgery.

Operation is performed only after the consent of the patient. Because, this surgery once carried out cannot be reversed and it requires a lifetime commitment of a healthy and balanced diet from the patient.

What is Bariatric Surgery Procedure?

When we say obesity surgery procedure, we don’t mean step-by-step procedure executed in the operation theater. Instead we mean the popularly recognized weight loss surgeries in the United States and other parts of the world.

Though there are eight popular procedures, only three are popular and recognized by hi-tech hospitals all around the world. Therefore, we discuss only those three, they are: restrictive, malabsorptive, and a combination of both restrictive and malabsorptive procedure.

Restrictive Procedure In restrictive procedure, the size of the stomach is reduced by staples and surgical bands. They’re attached to the upper portion of the stomach to decrease the stomach size. As a result, individual’s diet is reduced to half. And even with small amount of food, a feeling of fullness is felt. This procedure includes vertical-banded gastroplasty, gastric banding, and proximal gastric bypass.

Malabsorptive Procedure Incomplete absorption of food is what this procedure focuses on. In this the upper section and the lower section of the small intestine are joined so that the food bypasses the middle section and most portion of food is left unabsorbed. Nevertheless, surgeons do not recommend this procedure because of the complications it may trigger.

Both Restrictive and Malabsorptive Procedure – Since both the above mentioned procedures involve complications, surgeons combine both the procedures to perform the surgery. This minimizes the risk of harming the body in general and digestive system in particular.

What is Bariatric Surgery Benefits?

  •  Since bariatric surgery is a weight-loss surgery, the first benefit is relief from excess body weight.
  • Obesity and overweight related medical conditions improve after surgery is performed. Thus, it gives respite from diabetes, severe arthritis, high/low blood pressure problems, and from sleep apnea.
  • If some reports are to be believed, life expectancy too improves compared to overweight and obese people.

What is Bariatric Surgery Risks?

There are some serious threats of weight-loss surgery, but only 10% of the times. If surgery is successfully performed, then the common problems include:

  • Poor absorption of food results in malnutrition and weakness in the patient. Vitamin deficiency is also a common problem too.
  • May require removal of excess skin from the body through surgical procedures.
  • Stones in gallbladder may often result in removal of gallbladder

And if anything goes wrong, then serious complications too can surface. This includes health risks that are life-threatening, such as the following:

  • Heart attack or heart failure
  • Blood clotting in lungs
  • Bleeding ulcers

What is Bariatric Surgery Recovery Duration?

Weight-loss surgery patients are discharged from the hospital in a day or two, but are advised to take rest for a minimum 2 weeks. However, it depends on the strength and condition that patients often get back to driving and work only 10 days after the surgery. This totally depends on their ability and also on the medication.

Patients having pain-relief medicines are advised to take rest by the doctors. But in most cases 2 weeks is the recovery duration. This may vary from patient to patient, for some it may even go up to 6 weeks or more.

What is Bariatric Surgery Alternatives?

Obesity surgery isn’t a suitable option for every individual. Therefore, doctors don’t prescribe this surgery to all their patients. For that reason, there are other alternatives to bariatric surgery, they are:

Change in the Lifestyle i.e. being physically active and working out at the gym. 10-20 minutes of treadmill walk and cycling makes the difference.
Diet change i.e. eating low-fat nutritious food and avoiding junk food.
